Bull Terrier Puppy

Prior to buying a Bull Terrier puppy, you have to learn everything possible about this breed, such as its keeping requirements, trainability, exercise needs, and so forth. Unfortunately, some people buy potentially aggressive dogs and encourage aggression in them. Such irresponsible owners know little on the typical personality of the breed and obtain a strong and massive pet as a matter of prestige or in an attempt to enhance their image.

A Bull Terrier puppy should be obtained by responsible owners who appreciate this breed not for its fighting past, but for its present-day working abilities and wonderful personality. Such owners never encourage aggression in their dogs and choose a puppy by its personality, but not by its aggression level. The image of the Bull Terrier as a dangerous and fierce fighter is created by mass media, which takes a unique incident with a badly trained dog and claims that all breeds appeared a century ago for fighting are still vicious and blood-thirsting.

The Bull Terrier together with the American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and some other breeds are mistakenly referred to as Pit Bulls. There are also many crosses produced by irresponsible breeders. Such dogs are often unstable and difficult to train. They add to the hysteria around fighting breeds. Actually, the Bull Terrier was trustworthy and reliable early in the 20th century. Devoted breeders bred the aggressive tendencies out of these dogs when bull baiting and dog fights were banned. A Bull Terrier puppy of nowadays has very little in common with its ancestors.

Aggressive tendencies reappeared in Bull Terriers and other formerly fighting breeds in the 1980s when strong and potentially dangerous dogs became fashionable. Many breeders bred dogs for aggression and overprotection. They didn’t care about their trainability and ability to bond with humans. A properly bred and trained Bull Terrier should not be aggressive to anyone. Though it’s protective and territorial, it will not hurt a stranger and a trespasser without a reason. Bull Terriers should be even-tempered, gentle, obedient, and good with children. Aggression to humans and dogs in a Bull Terrier puppy is considered a serious fault.
