Bull Terrier

The Bull Terrier is a relatively new dog breed developed in England in the 1860s. The original purpose of the breed was bull baiting, but the Bull Terrier soon found popularity as a working dog and a family companion. The ancestors of the breed were the New English Bulldog, the English White Terrier and the Spanish Pointer. In the early 1900s, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier blood was added to the new breed.

The Bull Terrier was used for a variety of tasks. It can be a ratter, a guard, a watchdog, a sport companion, a herder, and even a hunting dog. In South Africa, for instance, these dogs were used to hunt wild pigs and warthogs. The personality of the breed is described as affectionate, obedient, sociable, protective, devoted to the family, and eager to please. The Bull Terrier is very playful and has a sense of humor.

In spite of a formidable appearance, the Bull Terrier is dependable, sweet, and gentle. Bull Terriers like to be around people making them laugh. These dogs are loyal and tolerant with children. They can easily tell a friend from a foe. Bull Terriers appreciate active outdoor games and mental stimulation. They especially enjoy hiking and jogging with the owner, and especially with the whole family.

Like any strong, active, and protective breed, the Bull Terrier requires the right owner. Novice owners are not recommended to buy a puppy of this breed, because improper training can turn into a tragedy with a powerful dog. Bull Terriers need a strong hand and an experienced owner who can provide proper training and necessary socialization for the Bull Terrier. All owners of these dogs should be aware of their typical health problems: sensitive joints, bloat, a tendency to overweigh, and some others. A typical lifespan of a Bull Terrier is around 12 years.

Bull Terriers are not the right pets for those who cannot devote much time to them. Though these dogs don’t need much daily exercise, they should not be left alone and neglected. A short daily walk in the park is enough for the Bull Terrier, but it cannot do without communication with the owner.
