Responsible breeders are expected to educate potential owners on the issue of owning Bull Terriers. Buyers should be informed on the history of the breed and its characteristics. They should also become aware of the basics of training the Bull Terrier.
Bull Terriers are very good natural guard dogs, but care must be taken that they are not encouraged to become possessive and jealous. This may seem a desirable attribute for someone who wants a dog to protect his wife and family, it can be a nuisance if the dog does not distinguish between acceptable strangers and malevolent ones. Bull Terriers can also become involved in the presence of violent physical activity such as children's fist-fights or exceptionally rough play activity where they see no reason not to join in, either to play roughly (which, with Bull Terriers, often includes nipping and knocking) or -to guard the family against the physical assaults of outsiders.
They need a great deal of companionship. Therefore, people who cannot devote much time to their Bull Terriers should be warned against buying this dog. The breed is very intelligent, yet is not always easy to train. The Bull Terrier tends to be dominant when allowed to do so. Hence, it is recommended to experienced trainers who can cope with difficulties. To train the dog properly, the owner should understand its personality and try to think similar. It is advised to take obedience classes. Professionals know how to train a puppy and can also help to handle behavioral problems in adult Bull Terriers.
