Bull Terriers do not need specialized care in terms of grooming and feeding. They are short-coated dogs that do not need extensive trimming or grooming. However, their coat does require regular brushing to keep it fit and rid of dead hairs. The breed is best with a small yard. It can adapt easily to an apartment if exercised daily. The dog is always active and needs long walks on leash.

Bull Terriers - Health Problems

Bull Terriers are susceptible to allergies, knee problems, deafness, heart diseases, and other health problems. It is recommended to buy puppies from OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certified breeding stock. Both parent dogs should also be tested for heart and kidney conditions. Before purchasing a puppy, check health certificates. The puppy should have BAER papers that confirm that it is clear from deafness problems.

Though the Bull Terrier is not leading in the chart of breeds that suffer most from deafness, this condition causes a lot of concern among breed lovers. Deafness is linked to the coat color. It is seen mostly in white-colored dogs. Deafness is hereditary, which increases the risk of the condition in puppies that come from affected parent dogs. Deafness can be either uni-lateral, or bi-lateral. Uni-lateral Bull Terriers are usually spayed/neutered. Though they have difficulty with directions, they make good pets. Bi-laterally deaf Bull Terriers are usually euthanized.
